A model turned actress Amrita Arora is a slow starter with a few hit films to her credit. A former MTV jockey, Amrita graduated to modeling through ad campaigns for Ponds, Elle 18, Sunsilk Frutamins and After Smoke.
Born to a Punjabi father and Malayli mother, Amrita’s walk to filmdom is made easier by her actor brother-in law Arbaaz Khan’s familiarity in the Bollywood. Superstar Salman Khan is brother of Arbaaz Khan.
Her debut film Kitne Door Kitne Paas with Fardeen Khan in the lead mail foil in 2002 was a flop. However, the lost ground was regained in the next film Awara Paagal Deewana the same year, as the movie was a comparatively successful one. Her fate, however, did not look up, as she had to play an item girl in Zameen in 2003.
Controversy raged with the release of Girlfriend in 2004 as here she played as a lesbian woman with Isha Koopikar. Although an unconventional theme, the movie is no parallel to Deepa Mehta’s Fire that deals with the same issue. Amrita, however, tried her best to portray the character, but for poor screenplay, the movie did not cut much ice.
She just had a special appearance in Mujhse Shaadi Karoge, which was a hit in 2004. Rakht: What If You Can See Future and Raakh made little business, while ‘Fight Club: Members Only’ was a moderate success. In both the films, however, she had cameo roles.
Red: The Dark Side triggered a controversy as it has a twenty-seven minute sex scene. With Aftab Shibdasani and Celina Jetley, Amrita had hardly any meaningful role in the movie, which many critics dubbed as a ‘porno’. The box office, however, had mixed collections over the film.
With a very uncertain future ahead, Amrita is pinning hope in upcoming Deha, Cash and Mera Bharat Mahan.
